The Free State Department for Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism, and Environmental Affairs (DESTEA) hosted the 34th Annual Game Auction from the 19th to 20th of April 2024 at Willem Pretorius Nature Reserve near Ventersburg.

The annual game auction forms part of the game management plan, which manages game populations in the 14th state-owned reserves and generates revenue for the Free State provincial government.

On the first day, 488 live game packages consisting of 13 different species were auctioned. On the second day of the event, 3 695 animals comprising 18 trophy hunts and 25 Non-Trophy Hunts were actioned to the highest bidder.

Animals sold or auctioned included Blesbok, Black Wildebeest, Buffalo, Ostrich, Cape Mountain Zebras, Springbok, Gemsbok, Blesbok, Eland, Red Hartebeest, and Waterbuck.

During the 2 day event, the highest bidder bought a white Rhino to the value of R270 000.00, and a carcass package to the value of R1060 000.00 was sold to the highest bidders.

To ensure game transformation of the game industry in the province, the department also has a program called Black Game Farmers where the department donates wild animals to emerging Game Farmers, which aims at assisting the farmers in taking part in the industry.
