MEC: MOSES KETSO MAKUME
Honorable Moses Ketso Makume is currently serving as MEC for Finance, Economic, Development and Tourism in Free State as appointed by the Premier Honorable Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae. He was born in Zamdela, Sasolburg in the Free State.
The year 1985 June 16 during the commemoration of the June 16 student’s uprisings became a defining moment for him when he became part of the few who played a leading role in the formation of Zamdela Youth Congress (ZAYCO), the organization that shaped and molded his Political Activism.
During the 1980’s he also became a member and a leader of the Vaal Youth Congress (VAYCO) AND Vaal Students Congress (VASCO) ahead of him joining and leading the Congress of South African Congress (COSAS). Hon. Makume has long been involved in the African National Congress (ANC)-led Mass Democratic Movement (MDM), spending most of his youth in the student and youth structures of the movement. He also served in various structures of the African National Congress (ANC). He is one of the dedicated ANC organizers and served in the ANC NEC Sub-committee for Organizing.
An energetic and all-round activist, Makume was also active in the Self-Defense Units defending communities against the violence unleashed by the Third Force and the apartheid government in the 1980s and early 1990s.
In 2001 he was appointed the District Mayor for Fezile Dabi District Municipality, a post he held until 2003.
Hon. Makume holds an undergraduate Degree in Public Administration from the University of Western Cape. After serving as the District Mayor MEC Makume was called to serve in various National Departments as the Head of Stakeholder Relations Management in the office of the Minister.
He has worked in post-1994 administration in various capacities, including:

2. Department Of Communications
3. Department of Minerals and Energy
4. Department of Human Settlements
In May 2021, Hon. Makume was named to the Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) of the African National Congress after the Supreme Court of Appeal ruled that the party’s 2018 provincial elective conference was unlawful and nullified the provincial leadership elected at the conference.
At the ANC’s provincial elective conference held from 21 to 22 January 2023, Makume was nominated from the conference floor for the position of Deputy Provincial Chairperson. He is currently the ANC Free State Deputy Chairperson.
